The short version
- Your library, chats and files are stored on your Mac. File conversions run offline.
- When you use an AI tool, the text or file you chose goes through Moonlet’s server to the AI model and back. We don’t keep it.
- Memory is off unless you turn it on. If you do, it stores short facts about you with our memory provider, for chat only, and you can see, edit or delete everything it remembers.
- Dodo Payments handles payment as our Merchant of Record. Your card details never reach us.
This summary is for convenience. The full policy below is what applies. Questions: support@moonletapp.com.

01Who we are
Moonlet is a Mac app made by Ayush Gupta, an independent developer (“we”, “us”). This policy explains what data the Moonlet app, Moonlet’s AI service and this website handle, where it goes, and what control you have over it.
We are responsible for your personal data as described here. For anything in this policy, email support@moonletapp.com.
02What is stored on your Mac
Moonlet is built to keep your work local. These are stored in Moonlet’s data folder on your Mac and are not uploaded to us:
- Your library: chats, drafts, the sources you bring in (copies of files and text), saved answers and study decks.
- Your tools, wheel layout, settings and tool-use counts.
- Ratings you give and the app’s own diagnostics, which record things like which model ran, how long it took, its cost and what kind of step failed, but not your text or the answers.
- Any API key you add in Settings, which is kept in the macOS Keychain and sent only to the service it belongs to.
File conversions run entirely on your Mac and work offline: PDF, Word, images, Office and iWork files. Your original file is never changed.
Selected text. Moonlet reads the text you’ve selected in another app only at the moment you open the wheel with your shortcut (⌥ Space by default, or any shortcut you set in Settings). This uses the macOS Accessibility permission, which you can turn off in System Settings at any time. In apps where that can’t read the selection, Moonlet briefly copies it and then puts your clipboard back. If nothing is selected, Moonlet may use what you last copied instead. Screenshots are taken only when you ask for one.
Data on your Mac stays until you delete it. Removing Moonlet and its data folder removes all of it. We can’t see it, so we can’t recover it for you.
03What leaves your Mac, and why
AI tools and chat
When you run an AI tool, ask a question or chat, Moonlet sends what that request needs: the text or file content you chose, your instruction, the tool’s prompt and, in chat, the earlier messages of that conversation.
The request travels over an encrypted connection to Moonlet’s server, which passes it to the AI model provider and streams the answer back to your Mac. Our server does not keep the content of your requests or the answers after the request ends. Your saved answers live in your library on your Mac.
Where our AI model providers offer it, we set them up so your requests are not used to train their models and are not kept after the answer is produced. Where that isn’t available, we use the shortest retention they allow.
Memory (off unless you turn it on)
Memory lets Moonlet remember lasting facts about you and your work across chats. It is off unless you turn it on (Moonlet asks once during setup, and you can change it in Settings at any time), and it only works in the chat window. The quick answer that appears next to your cursor never uses it.
When memory is on, the facts it learns and short notes about past chat sessions are stored with our memory provider under a random ID created on your Mac, not your name or email address. You can:
- switch memory off in Settings at any time;
- leave any single chat out of memory, which also deletes the session notes that chat already wrote;
- see, edit and delete every fact and past-session note on the Memory screen. A fact you delete is not added back.
Links you ask Moonlet to read
If you give Moonlet a web link to read, such as a job posting, your Mac fetches that page directly from the website it points to. Moonlet never fetches addresses on your own Mac or local network.
Free actions, Pro and credits
To count free AI actions and Pro credits, our server keeps only a number: how many actions have been used against your Pro plan or, on the Free plan, against a random ID created when you install Moonlet. It doesn’t record what you asked or what came back.
When you click Upgrade, the app opens our website with a one-time link code (not your name or email) so your purchase can be matched to that Mac and switch Pro on there. To use Pro on another Mac, you enter your purchase email and we send a one-time code to it; that Mac is then linked to your Pro plan.
Buying Pro
Moonlet Pro is sold by Dodo Payments, our authorized reseller and Merchant of Record. Dodo runs checkout, takes payment, calculates and collects sales tax or VAT, sends receipts and processes refunds. Your card details go to Dodo and its payment partners, never to us.
Dodo shares with us what we need to serve you: your name, email address, country, what you bought, payment status and which Mac’s random ID the purchase was made from. Dodo’s own use of your data is covered by the Dodo Payments privacy policy.
Email and support
If you email us, we use your address and message to answer you and keep a record of the conversation.
04This website
- Waitlist. If you join the waitlist, we store your email address and basic sign-up details with our hosting provider to send you news about Moonlet. Ask us and we’ll delete it.
- Hosting. Like any website, our host Cloudflare processes technical data such as your IP address to deliver pages and block abuse.
05Who we share data with
We share data with the kinds of service providers below, only to run Moonlet. Ask us and we’ll tell you which providers we use.
We may also disclose data if the law requires it, or to protect people or Moonlet from fraud or abuse. If Moonlet is ever sold or transferred, your data may be transferred as part of it.
06What Moonlet reads
Moonlet reads the selection you send with your shortcut. For Cold email, it can also read the address of the page in your front browser tab and recent job pages in your browser history, on your Mac, after macOS asks your permission.
07Legal bases
If you are in the EU, the UK or a place with similar laws, we rely on:
- Contract: to run the AI service, activate Pro, count credits and answer support requests.
- Consent: for memory and the waitlist. You can withdraw it at any time, and doing so doesn’t affect what happened before.
- Legitimate interests: to keep the service secure, prevent abuse of free actions, and fix problems. These never override your rights.
- Legal obligation: to keep purchase records that tax and accounting law requires.
08How long we keep data
09Your choices and rights
Most of your data is on your Mac, so you already control it. For data we hold, you can ask us to:
- tell you what we have and give you a copy;
- correct it, or delete it;
- stop or limit how we use it, or object to a use;
- move it to you in a common format.
Email support@moonletapp.com from the address the request relates to. We’ll reply within the time the law requires and may ask you to confirm it’s you. If you think we’ve handled your data wrongly, you can also complain to your local data protection authority, though we’d like the chance to fix it first.
10International transfers
Our providers run services in several countries, including the United States. When data moves across borders, we rely on safeguards the law recognises, such as adequacy decisions or contractual protections. Some of these countries may not protect data in the same way as yours.
11Security
Everything Moonlet sends travels over encrypted HTTPS connections. API keys are kept in the macOS Keychain, and we keep as little data as the service needs. No system is perfectly secure. If you find a security problem, please email us.
12Children
Moonlet is not meant for anyone under 18, and we don’t knowingly collect data from them. If you believe a child has given us personal data, tell us and we’ll delete it.
13Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we’ll update the date at the top. If a change meaningfully reduces your rights, we’ll also tell you by email or in the app.
